Car hire in Mauritius

Wait a moment!
We're looking at local car rentals to find a great deal for you.

Mauritius is the perfect place to rent a car and have a real tropical adventure. There are places to go and things to see!

The Black River Gorges National Park is an easy drive away to walk in the wild rainforest, feed wild animals, admire waterfalls, and have a picnic with great views. This place is very beautiful and peaceful. Just keep a close eye on your personal belongings because the local monkeys tend to ignore the anti-theft law.

If you want to visit the island's most sacred Hindu site, you should drive to the shores of Ganga Talao lake. It’s an extinct volcano crater lake. There is a temple with a number of shrines, colourful statues of the gods, lots of flowers, and wild monkeys on the shore. It is very noisy and crowded during religious festivals and peaceful and quiet on average days. Either way, you will have an unforgettable experience here.

Animal lovers should visit La Vanille Nature Park. There are hundreds of enormous turtles that you can pet, feed, and even allow your children to sit on them! Other attractions include a crocodile feeding show, a photo with a baby crocodile, an aviary with lemurs, a small contact zoo, and a restaurant with an unusual menu including... crocodile meat dishes. The usual Mauritian dishes are also available there.

Traffic regulations

The most important feature of local traffic is that it is left-hand traffic and the steering wheel is on the right. It will be quite easy to adapt because there is little traffic on the island, the roads are in excellent condition, and there are road markings and signs everywhere. Just take your time and be careful at exits and roundabouts.

If it is the first time you will be driving a right-hand drive car, you had better choose automatic transmission.

Basic traffic regulations:

  • Speed limits are 40 km/h in the city, 80 km/h on highways, 110 km/h on expressways.
  • The cars moving on the right have priority.
  • All car occupants must wear a seatbelt.
  • Children under 10 years of age may only ride in the rear seats.
  • You can talk on the phone while driving only when using a hands-free system.
  • Blood alcohol concentration limit is 0.5‰.

You must observe the local traffic regulations. There are many cameras on the roads.

Parking

Parking is mostly free of charge on the island.

You will find paid parking only in the centre of Port Louis, Curepipe, Quatre Bornes, and Rose Hill. The parking rates varies from 20 to 30 rupees per hour, depending on the location. You can pay with parking tickets that are sold at petrol stations and at some shops in the city centre.
